External-facing, presentation-ready uniform guide defining standards of wear
OVERVIEW
Translating uniform design into a shared visual standard
Amazon Air launched a new pilot program bringing together pilots from varied professional backgrounds. To establish cohesion, Amazon Air partnered with our team to design a dedicated pilot uniform collection intended to serve as the official Amazon Air pilot uniform.
Following completion of the collection, I led the design of a polished style guide that introduced the uniforms and defined clear standards for wear. Because the design process primarily involved leadership stakeholders, this guide became the pilots’ first comprehensive touchpoint with the system. The guide communicates expectations with authority while avoiding rigid “do and don’t” language—ensuring consistency without sacrificing day-to-day usability.
CHALLENGE
Establishing consistency for a newly formed pilot team
The challenge extended beyond styling individual garments. The guide needed to introduce a new visual identity while setting clear expectations that could be consistently applied across a newly formed team.
The style guide needed to:
Demonstrate correct wear, fit, and layering for each uniform piece
Explain the intent behind performance, comfort, and accessibility features
Establish a cohesive, enforceable appearance standard through clear visual guidance
Serve as the primary presentation of the finalized collection to pilots, HR, and leadership
Leadership emphasized an intuitive, authoritative document that reflected Amazon Air’s professionalism and could be adopted quickly.
APPROACH
Applying expertise to define clarity, not iterate on form
This project focused less on exploration and more on applying established expertise to define a clear, flexible framework.
Problem framing: Interpreted leadership’s goal as alignment through clarity rather than rule-setting
Constraints: Designed guidance—not policy—for a non-regulatory environment
Expertise applied: Leveraged prior uniform program research and studio best practices to independently define a scalable system
Collaboration: Worked closely with my manager and creative director to align pilot needs with brand expectations
Approach Context: This uniform system was developed by a studio specializing in corporate and aviation uniform programs, with deep experience designing pilot apparel. Industry-standard practices informed decisions made with limited direct pilot involvement, addressing known operational challenges at rollout.
DESIGN SYSTEM HIGHLIGHTS
A photography-led system that sets standards through visual clarity.
Styling clarity through on-body demonstration
Photography communicates correct fit, proportion, and layering without relying exclusively on written rules.
Design intent made visible at the point of use
Feature callouts explain functionality, comfort, and daily-wear considerations where they matter most.
Consistency across climates without visual drift
Outerwear options support varied environments while maintaining a unified, professional appearance.
System-ready execution for distribution and scale
Clear layouts and guidance enable pilots to adopt the standard, and allow HR and leadership to support it consistently.
IMPACT
Turning design intent into daily practice
Established a shared understanding of uniform standards for a newly formed pilot team
Clarified the purpose behind key design and styling decisions
Reduced questions and friction during onboarding and uniform distribution
Created a scalable system that can evolve as new uniform pieces are introduced
The result was a pilot-ready visual system that translated design intent into consistent, real-world application.
